Edomae sushi at Zen in Markham

⭐ RECOMMENDED

Zen

Woodbine Avenue, in a plaza whose most visible tenant is an auto repair shop. Chef-owner Seiichi Kashiwabara moved the restaurant up from Scarborough and has been running it for 25 years β€” edomae sushi and omakase at a wood-slatted counter, fish flown in from Japan several times a week, rice served warm and finely vinegared. The inspectors singled out Hokkaido scallops and murasaki uni, and called the nori some of the best in town. Recommended in the guide in both 2024 and 2025.

Michelin frames it as omakase you can do without the usual damage β€” but the guide still prices it at $$$$, so budget like it’s a real omakase night. Counter seats are limited; book ahead.

Markham has no starred restaurant right now. It did β€” Frilu on Yonge held a star from 2022 and added a Green Star in 2023 β€” but it closed in the summer of 2024, and nothing in the city has picked the star back up since.
